Join other photographers for six weeks of photographic exploration!

The Beginning Creative Course is about learning how to identify your own photographic style and inspiring you to search for new ways of seeing and photographing.

Discover what it is you typically enjoy shooting, ways that you tend to approach your subject, and then work on either refining those tendancies, or work to build upon them, doing things differently.

'terror' - Tim Waite

One of the things people comment on most is how much inspiration they receive from seeing how others in the group approach and photograph the assignments. It's all about your individual view of the world!

This course is for anyone, with any camera. It doesn't matter if you shoot in manual or full auto, or if you have a professional DSLR or an iPhone; the only requirement is that you're curious about learning about how you like to shoot, and how to see things differently to extend your photography.

Some sort of image editing software would be useful, but not required.

Each class is two and a half hours long, so that we have time to work as a group and individuals, perhaps take short "field trips", share ideas and view the previous week's work. You should expect to invest about 3 to 5 hours of your own time each week to work on your assignments.

This course is different from the Projects & Assignments Course in that it is a little more demanding, and each week builds on the previous week's work, whereas P&A has completely different, almost random, topics each week. Projects & Assignments is about learning new ideas for shooting, Creative is about learning more about who you are, how you shoot, and how you optimize those things to take more compelling photos! It's all about you!

The photos on the right side of the page are student photos from a project in a previous Creative Photo class. The goal was simply to photograph an egg, and it's remarkable how differently everyone interpreted that!

Come join us for discussion, laughter, and wildly interesting ideas and photographs. You will have an amazingly fun eight weeks, and probably want to do more!

Requirements

You don't need much to participate! We recommend the following:

  • Any camera that you know how to operate at some basic level.
  • The ability to retrieve your photos from your camera.
  • Some type of basic photo editing software. Most cameras come with some software you can use. Photoshop, Lightroom, or iPhoto are good programs to use. You do NOT need to be proficient in their use; you just need basic skills.
  • Two or more hours a week to get the most out of assignments.
  • A willingness to try new things and confront your own biases, head-on!
  • A desire to participate in assignments and discussions. Everyone needs to contribute! Don't worry; you will quickly become comfortable, and you'll find it easier to express your ideas and opnions within the first week or two.
