The·a·ter of the Ab·surd
1. Drama using the abandonment of conventional dramatic form to portray the futility of human struggle in a senseless world. Major exponents include Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, and Harold Pinter.

The Theatre of the Absurd (French: théâtre de l'absurde) is a post World War II designation for particular plays of absurdist fiction written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1950s, as well as one for the style of theatre which has evolved from their work. Their work focused largely on the idea of existentialism and expressed what happens when human existence has no meaning or purpose and therefore all communication breaks down, in fact alerting their audiences to pursue the opposite. This workshop will combine elements of improvisational theater and studio photography. Each photographer will also be a character for others to photograph. Bring your silly self, your dark and creepy self and anything in between.
We do not intend this to be quite as existentially dark as Theatre of the Absurd or Dada. It is more about randomness, creative juxtaposition, visual alchemy, and playful intention.
We will have two lighting configurations: One for portraiture and one for our 'stage set'. We will provide props and costume accessories. You may bring additional items or come attired in any manner you choose. If you want to completely wing it, wear something neutral and accessorize at firefly. If you have a concept of a character, please indulge yourself and release the madness. If you need suggestions, inspiration or permission to go nuts, contact Stephanie or Tim.
Artist Shannon McDonald will be providing creative (or traditional) make-up and helping with visual character development. Tim will join us to be lighting and technical master of all things photographic.
The idea for this is creative play within a theatrical structure, offering people the experience of interacting with absolutely no expectations and allowing photographers to practice capturing group scenes as they develop, as well as take wonderful and creative portraits. All participants will be asked to sign a model release so photographs can be used in portfolios and shows since we KNOW something awesome will come of this.
You will be interacting randomly with others in this setting, unlike the clay portrait workshop. It seemed to be the direction people wanted to head so off we go!
A desire to take risks and express yourself in ways that excite or terrify you!

Costumes and props are handy elements to bring.
